Black Mamba (mother), after both the loss of her husband and her son, falls into a severe depression, and Gifty is left behind to grieve the loss of everyone. Nana, a talented athlete, develops an addiction to oxycontin after being prescribed it for an ankle injury. We watch as this all unravels, how differently everyone (Black Mamba, Nana, and Gifty) grieve his absence. This takes a toll on their relationship, and not many years after Gifty is born, the strain of America, and the memory of home, leads to The Chin Chin Man (Father), returning back to Ghana. From the start, we see a difference in the parent’s perspective of what “a better life” looks like. With both parents being from Ghana, Gifty’s parents travel to America and settle in Alabama, to strive for a better life for Nana (Gifty’s older brother). My soul is still my soul, even if I rarely call it that.” “I am looking for new names for old feelings. And if anything, is a testament to the dynamic range in Gyasi’s penmanship. Many compared the book to Homegoing, which would be a huge mistake.
