The ex hex by erin sterling6/12/2023 ![]() ![]() ![]() Nine years ago, Vivienne Jones nursed her broken heart like any young witch would: vodka, weepy music, bubble baths…and a curse on the horrible boyfriend. Or with your own Welsh witch hottie, if you’re lucky enough to conjure one. The Ex Hex is a light and playful read, best devoured next to a roaring fireplace with a pumpkin martini in hand. This second-chance rom-com is full of magical mishaps, ghosts, a treat-obsessed cat, and plenty of sweet-and-spicy sexual tension. You’d hex them if you could, but there’s no need: just keep reading. Just when we think it can’t get any hotter, Vivi and Rhys almost have library sex. His hair still does The Thing and the chemistry between the two is white-hot. ![]() (Who of us hasn’t wanted to curse an ex while sipping vodka in the bathtub?) What she doesn’t expect is that same ex, Welsh hottie Rhys Penhallow, to reappear years later. But she’s also a witch so…no big surprise, she whips out the booze and a few playful hexes. Set in Graves Glen, a charming mountain town, Vivienne Jones is feeling the heartbreak. (My hand is raised.) The Ex Hex is the laugh-out-loud Halloween read we all need right now, so I’m giving you permission to light a pumpkin spice candle, grab the kettle corn, and pull out the potions. ![]() Raise your hand if you’re totally over summer and more than ready for a sexy, witchy rom-com. ![]()

Conan is a king leading human hordes to battle in Medieval fashion and a few pages later Conan is trapped in a dungeon and has to fight his way through ghastly monsters to regain his freedom. However, here we have what feels like a collection of stories pressed together in order to fulfill a publisher's minimum word count for a novel. These shorts were commonly centered around a single conflict and portrayed Conan in just one phase of his colorful career. ![]() Though later serialized, it was originally sold to a book publisher, rather than Howard's usual sales of short stories to the magazine Weird Tales, which were often no longer than 10-20k words. I think the reason for this is that, I believe, this was the only Conan story of novel-length Howard ever wrote. Ironically, that paradigm shifts somewhat in The Hour of the Dragon, which is a mishmash of, not so much the various Conans, but rather settings and, to steal a D&D term, encounters. Then you think of the screaming barbarian.įittingly, in reading Robert Howard's original Conan the Barbarian stories, what you soon realize is that Conan is a man of many faces: barbarian, lone wolf, war chief, king, pirate, thief. ![]() When you think of Conan you think of this. ![]() Chuck palahniuk adjustment day6/11/2023 ![]() ![]() It really weaves the story and establishes what is happening and where this telling of information will lead us. A lot of information is presented as fact which is fun. Aside from this deficiency, Palahniuk has managed to tell a story in which I as the reader have issue discerning what is fact or fiction, trying to decide if it's worth doing the personal research to remain in the suspension of disbelief. The most his voice changes is with the actor character who s reading a script in different ways over and over again for different takes. ![]() But based on what is said it should be easy to pick out who it is. Allen doesn't offer any voice inflection with a character change, so it can be hard to identify who is speaking at times. In my experience with Palahniuk the story has always been told well, and so I'm inclined to blame the narrator/director of the audiobook. Abrupt scene changes are jarring, and I'm not sure if that is the fault of the author or the narrator. ![]() A bit confusing at first, but it becomes easier and easier to understand the further along you read/listen. Corey Allen makes an otherwise amazing story drag. ![]() The lean startup audio book6/11/2023 ![]() It enables a company to shift directions with agility, altering plans inch by inch, minute by minute. Inspired by lessons from lean manufacturing, it relies on “validated learning,” rapid scientific experimentation, as well as a number of counter-intuitive practices that shorten product development cycles, measure actual progress without resorting to vanity metrics, and learn what customers really want. The Lean Startup approach fosters companies that are both more capital efficient and that leverage human creativity more effectively. What they have in common is a mission to penetrate that fog of uncertainty to discover a successful path to a sustainable business. This is just as true for one person in a garage or a group of seasoned professionals in a Fortune 500 boardroom. Eric Ries defines a startup as an organization dedicated to creating something new under conditions of extreme uncertainty. The Lean Startup is a new approach being adopted across the globe, changing the way companies are built and new products are launched. But many of those failures are preventable. ![]() Review cloud cuckoo land6/11/2023 ![]() ![]() Finally, in the near future, a generation ship makes its way to a new home for humanity. At the same time, a young man carries out a domestic terrorist plot that threatens the lives of the man, the children in his charge, and others. There’s the decades leading up to Lakeport, Idaho in 2020, where an eighty-year-old man is putting on a play based on this Diogenes text, which he has been translating from recovered scraps of Greek. There’s Constantinople in the years leading up to its invasion and sacking of 1453. The chapters take place across different time periods. This book is framed around a lost Diogenes story that tells of a foolish man named Aethon who, among other misadventures, visits a fantastical land-Cloud Cuckoo Land. I’m just not sure it becomes a unified story in a way that I consider satisfying. Anthony Doerr has clearly put a lot of work into this story, from research to setting and characters-and I want to be clear that I think there’s something here. As gripping as some parts of this book were, other parts were a snooze fest. It’s reminiscent in some ways of Sea of Tranquility. Cloud Cuckoo Land sounds like it should be my cup of tea. Ordinarily I love meta stories and stories that play with unreliable narration. ![]() James patterson book the noise6/11/2023 ![]() The military is called in to investigate this and they in turn rope in various specialist professionals to help them understand and cope with what is happening. In keeping with all James Patterson novels, this is also lightning fast and carries you along like the flow of a breakaway waterfall! As seems his wont in 2021, James Patterson veers into the realm of the supernatural and into fantasy and even Sci-Fi horror as some may term it. In this collaboration between James Patterson and J D Barker, it is evident that most of the heavy lifting – in terms of the writing – is done by the junior member of the duo and it probably falls on the senior partner to give the work his finishing touches.
